What an Alleppey boat house trip looks like
My Trip Boat House operates Kerala house boats from Alappuzha, better known as Alleppey, and from Kumarakom. A houseboat, or kettuvallam, is a converted rice barge with bedrooms, a dining deck and a crew of three: captain, chef and assistant. You cruise the lake and village canals by day and anchor in a quiet stretch overnight.
We run three fleet tiers. Deluxe boats have air conditioning at night, Premium boats add an upper deck, and Luxury boats run full-time air conditioning with glass-walled lounges. Every boat is licensed by the Kerala Inland Navigation authority and inspected yearly.

- Boats board at the Punnamada Finishing Point in Alappuzha (Alleppey) and at Kumarakom, on Vembanad Lake in Kerala, India.
- How long
- An overnight houseboat runs 21 hours, 12 PM check-in to 9 AM check-out. Day cruises run about 11 AM to 5 PM. Shikara rides last 1 to 4 hours.
- Boat sizes
- Private house boats have 1 to 5 bedrooms, sleeping 2 adults and 1 child per room. Shared houseboats let you book a single room.
- Food
- Overnight stays include welcome drinks, lunch, evening tea, dinner and breakfast cooked onboard by your own chef.
- Price
- Prices are per boat per night for private houseboats and per person for shared boats and day cruises. Live rates show for your dates before you pay.
- Best time
- October to March for clear skies, June to September for green monsoon scenery and the lowest rates.

How much does a houseboat in Alleppey cost per night?
A private 1-bedroom houseboat in Alleppey starts from about ₹7,000 per night in the off-season and ₹12,000–₹18,000 in peak season (December–January). Prices include all meals, a dedicated crew and a 22-hour cruise. Shared houseboat berths and shikara rides are available from under ₹1,500 per person.

When is the best time to visit the Kerala backwaters?
October to March is the most popular season with clear skies and cool evenings. June to September brings the monsoon, lush greenery and the lowest prices. The Nehru Trophy snake-boat race in August is a highlight for day-cruise visitors.
How many guests can a houseboat accommodate?
Houseboats sleep two adults and one child per bedroom and come in 1 to 5-bedroom layouts, so up to 10 adults and 5 children. Shikara boats carry 6–8 guests, day cruises up to 20 and speed boats up to 4. Extra adults can be added to a houseboat for ₹1,500 per person per night.
Payment & cancellation
Which payment methods do you accept?
All major credit and debit cards, UPI, net banking and wallets through CCAvenue, a PCI-DSS certified gateway. GST (5% for bookings under ₹7,500, 18% above) is shown before you pay. International cards are accepted.
Can I cancel my houseboat booking and get a refund?
Yes. More than 30 days before check-in: 10% fee. 15–30 days: 25%. 7–14 days: 50%. Under 7 days: no refund. Peak-season bookings (15 December – 10 January) are non-refundable. Refunds reach your account within 7–10 business days.

Onboard & safety
Are Alleppey houseboats safe and licensed?
Yes. Every boat we list is licensed by the Kerala Inland Navigation authority, inspected annually and carries life jackets for all guests, fire-safety equipment and a first-aid kit. Crew are trained in safety procedures and boats anchor in calm waters overnight.
What food is served on a houseboat?
Freshly cooked Kerala cuisine prepared by an onboard chef: welcome drinks, lunch, evening tea with snacks, dinner and breakfast. Karimeen (pearl spot fish), prawns, vegetarian thali and Jain or continental options are available on request.
What should I pack for a backwater cruise?
Light cotton clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a camera and personal medication. Mosquito repellent is recommended for evenings. Towels, toiletries, drinking water and life jackets are provided onboard.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Cruises run in most weather, including light monsoon rain, and the covered deck keeps you comfortable. If the harbour authority suspends sailing for safety, we reschedule your trip to another date or refund you in full.

What are the houseboat check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is 12:00 PM and check-out is 9:00 AM the next morning, giving you a 22-hour cruise. Day cruises typically run 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Early check-in or late check-out can be requested for a small fee.
Where do I board the houseboat in Alleppey?
Boats depart from the Punnamada finishing point or Kumarakom jetty; your exact boarding point and a Google Maps pin are sent with your confirmation. Alleppey railway station is 15 minutes away and Kochi airport about 2 hours. Pick-up can be arranged.
